'You can keep your f’king gypsies!' – Councillor suspended after offensive Eurovision tweet

Nick Harrington has been suspended for 6 months

A Tory councillor has been suspended over the weekend after an offensive tweet was posted on his account about Irish people and gypsies during Eurovision.

Nick Harrington, who is also a magistrate, has been suspended by Warwick District Council for six months, according to the Coventry Telegraph.

The tweet said: “#Eurovision2017. Thanks Ireland. You can keep your f’king gypsies!”

The message on Cllr Harrington’s account came after none of the Irish Eurovision Song Contest judges backed the UK’s entry to win.

The tweet also added: “Hard border coming folks!”

Warwick District Council have since apologised for the “offence and upset that his comments have caused”

An investigation into the matter is now due to take place.

The tweet, which was taken down, has been branded "unacceptable" by council leader Cllr Andrew Mobbs, according to the Telegraph.

Warwich District Council confirmed via Twitter: “Cllr Nick Harrington has been suspended by Cllr Andrew Mobbs, Leader of Warwick District Council, pending a full investigation.

“We apologise unreservedly for the offence and upset that his comments have caused.”

One twitter user said: “Disgusting behaviour, he is shown to be sexist and racist. These are not the qualities expected."

Another added: “Why only a suspension? His comments were clearly racist. Very disappointed in my district council for not doing more!”
