EUROVISION GRAND FINAL: Qualifying countries, odds and running order

This year’s Eurovision Song Contest bears all the hallmarks already of a few ‘blood on the carpet’ moments after this week’s two semi-finals

Ten countries qualified on both Tuesday and Thursday, while a total of 16 countries were eliminated. However, there were some significant omissions, given the below par performances in the first semi by Sweden, Greece, Australia and Belgium, who all qualified over the highly rated Norma John Band representing Finland.

If you think the UK might be miffed this Sunday morning by getting very few points, spare a thought for the Finnish elimination, which came after the piano sequence that was meant to take the metaphorical Blackbird soaring to new heights but was barely audible. Then UK television viewers heard a seemingly out of touch BBC presenter Mel Giedroyc trample all over the song’s final crescendo.

From the same semi-final Poland qualified, while half decent songs including Martina Barta from the Czech Republic and Iceland’s Svala were both eliminated.

In the second semi-final the elimination of Estonia’s song seemed to be down to the pair Koit and Laura being ‘lost’ on the giant stage and not in Verona, as the song title suggested.

There were a few surprises with many assuming Croatia would go out because of the generally naff stage presentation, but singer Jacques Houdek pulled out a fantastic vocal performance to qualify.

On the face of it, the final would appear to be between Portugal and Italy with Bulgaria also making a late showing, but don’t rule out The Netherlands, Azerbaijan, Poland, Moldova, Romania, Croatia and Ukraine, with possibly Lucie Jones, the UK entrant, making a half decent showing for the minor places.
